Advent Wreaths and Candy Houses

As we begin the Advent season this coming Sunday, December 2nd, there are many things that are happening in the life of the church. Two that we DON’T want you to miss are when we come together to make Advent wreaths and Candy Houses.

Both are a fun time of fellowship (and food – yes, there will be dinner!) We need to get a head count on everyone who is planning to come, so we’ll have enough food as well as supplies. Please take a moment TODAY and click on the this link, https://www.signupgenius.com/go/409084dadac23a4f85-advent and sign up for one or both events!

CHURCH MINISTRIES

There will be a Congregational meeting immediately following worship today. The purpose of this meeting will be to elect elders for the class of 2021. The nominees from the Nomination Committee are: Nancy Dixon, Pete Pequeno, Marinda Rives and Durenda Wilson. Jane Tesh has been nominated to fill a slot of the class of 2019. Alex Bowers has been nominated to be our youth elder.

Are you visiting with us? If so, we are glad to have you! A couple of things you may inquire about: 1) Restrooms are located in the upstairs foyer and hallway. 2) Nursery is available to children birth-2 that lasts the entire length of worship. Children age 3-Kindergarten can stay in worship for the Children’s sermon, then have the option of going to Children’s Church (more information in announcement below). If you have further questions, please see one of our ushers.

Please be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram so you can receive all the latest announcements. If you are not on social media, please be sure Lynn has your current email address!

Texts for upcoming sermons: As we continue in First Corinthians, we will focus on Worship. This is the theme of the fourth section of the book. Here are the topics and the texts for different Sundays: November 18: The Resurrection Chapter 15.

Thanksgiving Feast: On Sunday, November 18th, we will come together and celebrate our 11th Thanksgiving Feast together. It will be held immediately following worship.  Join us as we give thanks. There are several ways to let us know you wish to come: 1) fill out the form in today’s bulletin and drop it in the offering plate, 2) sign-up on the sheet in the upstairs hallway, or 3) call the church office (336.786.2803).  Please do so before the end of the day on Wednesday, November 14th, so we’ll know how many to plan for.  The cost is $10 per person.  Children 12 and under eat free.  The menu will consist of ham and several holiday fixings as well as dessert and drink. It will be catered by Chris Wishart.

Beacons: (6th-12th grade): Will not meet this evening.

Walk through the Bible Sunday School Class: Join us each week from 9:45 to 10:45 each Sunday in the Fellowship Hall.  The class combines discussion, cool videos and reading the Bible in small groups. Childcare is available.  Griff is teaching this class.

Children’s Church: Would you like to spend some quality time with a great group of kids learning and doing activities based on the Children’s Sermon message? If you are able to help at least one Sunday between the months of November or December, please see Valerie Parker or email at kids@fpcma.com. You may also sign-up on the Kid’s Corner board at the bottom of stairs (next to Children’s Church/Sunday School room). Two volunteers are needed each week. Details of story and activities will be provided to you a week beforehand. Helpers still needed for the following dates: November 25, December 9 (need one volunteer), December 23 and December 30.

Choral Cantata: Are you interested in joining the choir to sing during the Cantata? They could use the extra voices. They are now practicing music for their “Lesson in Carols” and invite you to come join them at 7:30 pm on Wednesday nights to practice.

Parent’s Night Out! Saturday, December 1st, 4:00-8:00 p.m.; Need to go grab coffee? Dinner? See a movie? Christmas shop? You can do that and leave your children with the Beacons.  There will also be adult supervision. We’ll have movies, games, dinner and some other snacks. Sign up on the sheet in the upstairs or downstairs foyer. Deadline to sign up is Monday, November 26th.  See Sandy Bowers for more info.

Advent Devotionals: In recent years, we have ordered advent devotionals but have found that we have many left over.  We’d like to know if you are interested in receiving a devotional this year for the Advent season.  There is a sign-up sheet on the board in the upstairs foyer.

2019 Montreat Conference: July 28th-August 3rd; If you are planning to go, a deposit of $100 is due by Saturday, December 14th.

WITNESS

Thanksgiving Meals: In years past, the Beacons have sold pumpkins during the Autumn Leaves Festival to feed the hungry in our community for Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, they were unable to get pumpkins this year due to all of the rain.  However, they know the need to feed the hungry is still there.  They had a bake sale to jump start the proceeds.  They would love to be able to feed 50 families; so far we have funds for 37 meals.  Meals are $45.00 each.  If you would like to sponsor a family, please get a check or cash to Joy Barlow or Margaret McGuire by Thursday, November 15thPlease make your gift separate than your regular giving to the church. If you are writing a check, make it to: FPC Beacons.  Thank you for helping us feed the folks in our community as well as those at the Shepherd’s House & Children’s Center.
