CHURCH MINISTRIES

The Flowers in the Church today are given to the Glory of God and in honor of Eloise Erin Morrison on the day of her baptism by her parents, Luke and Lizzie Morrison.

Beacons/Youth on the Town: (6th-12th grade): Our next get-together will be on Wednesday, June 27th. We will be gathering at the Gatewood’s house.

Summer Adult Sunday School Opportunity: Learning to Pray Together
Prayer is so integral to our lives as the people of God no matter what is happening, but especially when we are grieving, lamenting, upset, or transitioning. Sarah Butler will be leading a short 6-week series on prayer at 9:00-9:45 am, beginning Sunday, June 3 and ending Sunday, July 8 in the Ladies Parlor.

The topic for June 24 will be adult discipleship and church-wide Christian education.
The topic for next week, July 1, is bringing our hopes for the future of FPC to God.

Listening Sessions with Sarah Butler: Sarah is conducting a series of “listening sessions” with members of the congregation to better understand our diverse hopes, needs, desires, and concerns. If you are interested in this kind of conversation, please feel free to reach out to Sarah at church on Sundays or via email: sarahcatherinebutler@gmail.com.

Report-Out on Summer 2018 Listening Sessions: Sarah Butler will be presenting the findings and recommendations from her church-wide listening sessions on Sunday, July 8, after the service in the Koinonia Room. Coffee and snacks provided. Please come and hear what she has learned from listening to you and discerning where God is leading next!

Lighting the Christ Candle in Shasta’s Memory: The Christ Candle symbolizes the light of Christ coming into the world.   As we grieve the death of our Christian Educator, Shasta Bode-Brown, we will light the Christ Candle each Sunday. Shasta reflected the love and light of Christ in her ministry among us.   As a symbol of her ministry, the Christ Candle is surrounded by seventeen smaller votive candles: one for each year of Shasta’s service to the church.

Bob Chilton Memorial Bible Study: Thursday, June 28th at 8:00 a.m. at Pages.  Join us for coffee and great discussion.

Sermon texts for upcoming Sundays: June 24: 1 Cor. 1:17-2:5; July 1: 1 Cor. 2:6-3:4; July 8: 1 Cor. 3:5-23; July 15: 1 Cor. 4:1-21; July 22: 1 Cor. 5:1-12; July 29: 1 Cor. 6:1-11

Sign up to teach Summer Spark! We still need people to sign up to lead Summer Spark on a week-by-week basis. Sign-up sheet is on bulletin board across the hallway from the kitchen. Teaching involves playing a short Bible-based video with matching coloring project, as well as leading children in memorization of Psalm 23 and 3 catechism questions. A teaching process overview handout is available; ask Sarah Butler (sarahcatherinebutler@gmail.com) if you have more questions.

Music Notes: The composer of the month is Charles W. Ore.  He was Ellen’s organ professor at Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Illinois.  He recently retired as head of the music department at Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska.  The six books of his organ works show his unique style of hiding the melodic lines of familiar hymn tunes within sections of unusual rhythms and harmonies.

Last summer, we had the opportunity to assist with the Summer Feeding Program through the Mount Airy City Schools. It is a wonderful program that allows individuals or groups to come together to feed the kids in our community during the day. There are so many, that without this program, would not have access to nutritional meals over the summer.

There is a signup sheet that will either be in the hallway outside of the upstairs kitchen – or in the Koinonia Room.  If this is something you’re interested in helping with, please make sure that you seek out the signup sheet or speak to Jason Pflug.  Different groups (Circle 1, Keenagers, Beacons) or individuals alike can participate!

They are looking for volunteers particularly on Thursday mornings – from 10:30-11:30 am – at the High School cafeteria beginning this coming week.

FINANCIAL

Financial Update
Jan-May 2018 Jan-May 2017
Income $101,598.30 $105,641.96
Expenses $95,109.28 $104,961.84
The Budget Committee would like to provide the congregation a brief summary of our finances in the first several months of the year. Our finances are in good shape, due to your faithfulness and generosity.  Our income exceeds our expenses. Our year to this point has been full of worship as we have observed Lenten Bible studies on Wednesday evenings, gathered on Sunday mornings and worshiped our Resurrected Lord on Easter morning. Your tithes and offerings have turned on the lights, paid our staff, provided meals for the hungry and allowed God’s name to be praised. As our summer unfolds, we are excited to have our pastoral intern, Sarah Butler, back with us for a brief time. We look forward to VBS, high school and college graduations, middle and high school retreats, Bible studies and numerous other activities within the life of the church.

Dear Parents of Spark Children,

As in the past, summer Spark classes are staffed by different parents each week in order to accomodate summer travel plans, and the format of the Sunday morning class is slightly different than the school year’s classes.

This year, in addition to showing a Scripture-based video and providing opportunities for coloring and play, we will be helping our children memorize Psalm 23 (“The Lord is my shepherd…) and 3 questions from New City Catechism that will begin to teach children some of the core doctrines of the Christian faith shared by Presbyterians and most major Christian denominations alike.

The New City Catechism is a modern-day resource aimed at helping children and adults alike learn the core doctrines of the Christian faith via 52 questions and answers. A mobile app is available for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. The free app includes kid-friendly songs designed to help children memorize each question and answer, as well as suggested Scripture readings, short prayers, and devotional commentary.

The Spark teachers will be helping your child memorize the Psalm and the 3 questions each Sunday, and you can support their efforts at home by using the tools mentioned above to aid their memorization.

Thank you for entrusting your children to us, for jumping in to help staff the classroom on the occasional Sunday morning, and for all you do to love your children and help them grow as followers of Jesus.

-Griff
