Summer Sunday Worship: Today through Labor Day, Sunday, September 2nd, we will have worship at 10:00 a.m. We hope you will join us!

Beacons: Will not meet this evening due to the Memorial Day holiday.

Church Office Closed: Monday, May 28th, for the Memorial Day holiday.

Summer Adult Sunday School Opportunity: Learning to Pray Together:
Prayer is so integral to our lives as the people of God no matter what is happening, but especially when we are grieving, lamenting, upset, or transitioning. Sarah Butler will be leading a short 6-week series on prayer at 9:00-9:45 am, beginning Sunday, June 3 and ending Sunday, July 8. We will meet in the Ladies Parlor.

Whether you are a seasoned prayer “warrior” or someone newer to praying out loud with other Christians, this class will be structured so that you can participate at any level. Each week will have a topic for prayer and a brief passage of Scripture that will guide reflection. The topic for June 3 will be: trust and hope in the face of an uncertain future.

Again, all “experience” levels and youth or adults welcome! Email sarahcatherinebutler@gmail.com with questions.

Listening Sessions with Sarah Butler: FPC is in a season of unique congregational and organizational needs, as we lament the death of our Director of Christian Education, Shasta Bode-Brown, and consider the future of children’s, youth, and adult ministry at our church. To address these needs, the Session has invited Sarah Butler, our Duke Divinity School Intern from last summer, to return to be with us for eight weeks as an external pastoral consultant. Many of you got to know Sarah last summer. The Session’s desire is that Sarah may utilize her strategic planning, human resources, and church ministry professional experiences, in order to help us discern how God is at work amid all the current changes and tumult, and to help us prayerfully discern a vision for the next chapter of our congregational life.

To begin this discernment process, Sarah will conduct a series of “listening sessions” with members of the congregation to take the pulse of the congregation and better understand our diverse hopes, needs, desires, and concerns for this church. A deep understanding of the current state of things will help give rise to a vision for where God is leading next. The wisdom gleaned from those conversations will be given to the pastor and to session for the purpose of establishing vision and goals for the upcoming year.

If you are interested in this kind of conversation, please feel free to reach out to Sarah at church on Sundays or via email: sarahcatherinebutler@gmail.com.

Lighting the Christ Candle in Shasta’s Memory: The Christ Candle symbolizes the light of Christ coming into the world.   As we grieve the death of our Christian Educator, Shasta Bode-Brown, we will light the Christ Candle each Sunday. Shasta reflected the love and light of Christ in her ministry among us.   As a symbol of her ministry, the Christ Candle is surrounded by seventeen smaller votive candles: one for each year of Shasta’s service to the church.

Shasta’s Office: A small team of people will be sorting through and emptying Shasta’s office in mid-June. The Session and church staff would like you to know that the door will be open between now and then, should you like to stop in and have some time to remember all the good, faithful work that took place in that space.

Beacon Yard Sale: Saturday, June 2: Beacons are currently collecting items for their annual yard sale to raise money for their summer trips. Items can be dropped off in Fellowship Hall before and after worship today, and during office hours May 28-31. Anyone making a donation will be allowed to shop at the preview sale Friday, June 1, 4:30-7:00 pm. On Saturday, June 2, sale hours will be 7:00-noon. Doors will reopen at 12:30 for half-price/fill-a-bag sale. Sale ends at 2pm. Contact Sandy Bowers (336-341-9432) or Beth Pequeno (336-756-1879) for more info.

FPCMA High School Summer Internship: FPCMA is considering offering rising high school seniors the opportunity to spend time this summer at the church as an intern.   Interns will spend a few mornings a week at the church.  They will study scripture, spend time in prayer, read a book, assist in worship, and learn more about the day in and day out life of our congregation.  If you are a rising high school senior and are interested, please contact Griff.

PB & J Collection: We will be collecting peanut butter and jelly for our Sandwich Saturday ministry.  If you’re at the store picking up any, could you pick up a few extra so we can feed the hungry in our community?  There are boxes on the table in the Koinonia Room for you to place any items purchased.

Sandwich Saturdays: Will begin on Saturday, June 16th and will run through August 18th.  Please sign up on the board in the upstairs foyer if you’d like to assist with this ministry.

Dear Friends in Christ,

Greetings in the name of our Risen Lord Jesus Christ.

This Easter has been a mixture of joy and grief for each as we have mourned the death of our Christian Educator, Shasta Bode-Brown. I am sure that our time of collective mourning will continue into the summer. As we grieve, we also can trust that the Triune God of Grace holds our future in his hands. Jesus has gone ahead of us! The Spirit’s friendship and the Father’s power are making a way for us! The Lord is calling us as persons and as a people to follow him. This is a great comfort to me even as I feel the exhaustion after the past few weeks.

Even as we grieve, we enter into a season of transition into the future that the Lord holds. We are in a time of unique congregational and organizational needs. To address these needs, the Session has invited Sarah Butler, our Duke Divinity School Intern from last summer, to return to be with us for eight weeks as an external pastoral consultant. Many of you got to know Sarah last summer. The Session’s desire is that her presence will help us to collectively articulate prayers of lament, intercession, and supplication and, thereby, have a vision for our congregation’s future.

Sarah will begin on May 21st and be with us through July 12th. Please plan on welcoming her then. You can expect more details to come, but know that in some form or fashion, Sarah will be conducting intentional, informal conversations with many of the members of the congregation in order to listen to the heart of our congregation, help us to articulate our needs and passions and aid us in discerning a vision for how we might best meet those needs.

Grace and Peace,

Griff
