NEW ELDER OF THE MONTH

Mike Beal

  1. Describe yourself. This could include your family, your job, what you like to do, etc.

My name is Mike Beal. I have lived in Mount Airy most of my adult life. I am married to Legh, and have two girls, Catherine, 21, a junior at N.C. State, and Maggie, 16, a junior at Mount Airy High School. I have been employed as an Assistant District Attorney for Surry and Stokes Counties since 2007. I enjoy sports, reading and binge-watching Netflix.

  1. When did you start coming to First Presbyterian Church, and what do you enjoy about being part of this community?

I started coming to this Church in the late 1970’s or early 1980’s. I came with my Mom and Dad. We had previously been members at Flat Rock Presbyterian. Our Church community has always been a very welcoming place, which is why I enjoy it so much.

  1. How would you describe your relationship to Jesus Christ?

As with any meaningful relationship, my relationship with Jesus Christ is complicated. I believe he is my Lord and Savior, but I struggle with concept of grace. I still believe that I must somehow “earn” His grace, when I know the Bible teaches this is not so.

  1. How would you like to make First Presbyterian Church better?

First Presbyterian is already a great place. I would like to see increased membership, of course, and want to maintain a strong and vibrant Youth program. I believe it is important to continue our Mission work in the local community and the world community. I want us to be there for each member of the congregation.

FINANCIAL

Thank you for your generosity in 2017.  Through your faithfulness in giving we ended the year on a good financial note.  Our total revenues were $227,000 compared to our $243,000 goal.  Our expenses totaled $237,000 compared to our budget of $243,000.  If you do the math, you’ll see that we spent $10,000 more than we raised. However, given surpluses from the past two years, our bank balance was in good shape at the beginning of the year.

As we head into 2018, we have received 45 pledges in the amount of $162,010.  Our goal is 75 pledges in the amount of $225,000.  If you would like to turn in a pledge for the year, you can find pledge cards in your bulletins, at each entrance to the sanctuary and in the upstairs foyer.

If you wish to pledge online, you may do that as well by using the url: tinyurl.com/fpc2018.

2017 Year-End Contribution Statements: Can be found on the table in the Koinonia Room.  They are listed alphabetically.  Please pick yours up today.  If not picked up after a few weeks, they will be mailed.
