Financial Update

Thank you is not enough to each person and family who has given to support the life and work of the church in 2017. You are a generous people! As of December 29th, our total giving is $224,287. To meet our goal of $243,000, we need to raise $18,713 by the end of the year. If you haven’t fulfilled your pledge for the year and wish to do so, please make sure it is received in the church office no later than December 31st.

Sympathy of the Congregation

Our heartfelt sympathy is expressed to Bill and Jane Rountree on the death of Bill’s sister, Jaquitha Rountree Reid, who passed away on December 21, 2017, surrounded by her family at Testa Hospice House. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Kings Mountain.  Please be in prayer for Bill and Jane and the rest of the family.

FINANCIAL

Many thanks to each person and family who has given to support the life and work of the church. You are a generous people! As of December 21st, our total giving is $216,804. We need to raise $26,196 by the end of the year to meet our goal of $243,000. Please check with Lynn to see if you’ve fulfilled your pledge this year. If everyone fulfills their pledge, we will be $18,000 closer to our goal.

2017 Year-End Contributions: All contributions must be received or postmarked by Friday, December 29th, 2017. If you contribute by eGive, you should receive information regarding year-end procedures.

CHURCH MINISTRIES

Come to Sunday School! There are two adult options. The Odds and Ends Class meets across from the upstairs Men’s restroom. This class follows a year-round curriculum and is led by Felton Godwin and others. The Sunday Scripture class meets in the parlor. Contact Cecelia Belk for more information. Classes start each Sunday between 9:45 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

Children’s Christmas Pageant and Rehearsal: This afternoon at 3:00 p.m. (If you are participating, please be here and in costume no later than 2:45 p.m.)

Candlelight Communion Service: Sunday, December 24th at 7:00 p.m.; Join us this evening at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary for this wonderful service as we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, God with us.

Poinsettias: If you placed a poinsettia in the church for Christmas, please remember to take it/them home with you after the morning worship service today.

Church Office Closed: Christmas Day, Monday -Wednesday, December 25-27th; so that the staff can spend time with their families. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Montreat Youth Conference: July 28th-Aug 4th, 2018; Any Beacons who are eligible to go to Montreat next year will receive a postcard in the mail. The first deposit of $100 is due on Monday, January 15th.

Bob Chilton Memorial Bible Study: Thursday, December 28th; 8:00 a.m. at Pages. We will look at Luke 2: 22-40; this would be the time beyond means and expectations!

WITNESS

Christmas Joy Offering: Will be received this morning during the worship service. The Christmas Joy Offering honors the faithfulness of current and retired church workers and their families in need.

Candy House Making and Dinner: Join us this evening at 5:00 p.m. for dinner ($5.00 from Chile Rojo) and stay afterwards to make candy houses.  The Beacons will be joining in as well.

Choral Cantata:  Next week, December 17th, if seats are available, please sit in the sanctuary if you are able so that you will be able to enjoy the music of the Cantata fully.

Thank you! To all of the folks that came and assisted with getting the tree and wreaths put up and decorating at the church: Mike Branch, Wayne Barlow, Paul Belk, Carole Simpson, Jane Tesh, Mary Higgs, Suzanne Lewis-Brown, Lydia Taylor and Mary Ellen Goad. Beacon Angel Tree Shopping and Dinner: Wednesday, December 13th; Meet at the church at 5:00 p.m. and we will head to dinner and shopping for our Christmas angels. Bring $20 for your gift and extra money for dinner.

Bob Chilton Memorial Bible Study: Will meet on Thursday, December 14th, at 8:00 a.m. at Pages.  Join us for coffee and great discussion.

Faith Friends Advent Tales and Get Ready, Get Set, Worship Kids: Will meet on Thursday, December 14th, in the Fellowship Hall at 3:30 p.m.  The children’s choir will also meet during this time.

You’re invited! The congregation is invited to an informal cider/cookie open house on Saturday afternoon, December 16th at “Cousin Emma’s Bed and Breakfast Inn” (Suzanne Lewis Brown’s home) 501 South Main Street from 2-4 pm.  See Suzanne for details.

Longest Night Service:  Sunday, December 17th; 7:00 p.m. Perhaps this has been a hard year for you or you are having trouble getting into the ‘spirit’ of the season.  All are welcome to gather for prayerful worship of Jesus Christ, the Light of the world, who is with us even on this (symbolically) longest and darkest night of the year.  Childcare provided for infants through 2nd grade.

WITNESS

Friends Feeding Friends: Thursday, December 14th; 5:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church.  The following people are signed up to assist with this ministry that feeds the hungry in our community each week: Steven Lowe, Bob Keck and Bob & Sylvia Chilton.  We need additional volunteers.  If you’d like to assist, please see the signup sheet in the upstairs foyer.

Sympathy of the Congregation

Our heartfelt sympathy is expressed to the family of Dot Besore who passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2017, in Greensboro. Dot was born January 18, 1933.  A memorial service will be held Wednesday, December 6, 2017, at 12:00 noon at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Griffin Gatewood officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 11:00 until 11:45 AM at the church.  A private inurnment will follow in the columbarium at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1286, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
