FPCMA reaches out to Oklahoma!

pda_logo2We are all heartbroken by the tornado disaster that took place in Moore, OK this past week.  As it does following similar tragedies, the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has already mobilized to minister to those in need.   As cleanup begins, families will need supplies to begin reclaiming their lives.  This is where we can help!

Our goal is to collect enough donations to supply PDA with at least 25 “cleanup buckets” (a list of what is contained in these buckets can be found HERE).  Our own Wayne Barlow is working with local stores to get the needed supplies at a discounted price.

We will be taking up a special offering during worship this Sunday and next – May 26 and June 2.  Feel free to give whatever you can, knowing that a single bucket full of supplies will run somewhere in the $30-40 range with the anticipated discounts.  Your gift should be above and beyond your normal giving to the church.  If you write a check, please make it out to “First Presbyterian Church” and put as the notation, “PDA Cleanup bucket.” You can also mail the donation to the church prior to June 2.

We will also need help assembling the buckets later in June when all the donations have come in and the needed items are purchased.  Be on the lookout for more details.

Any questions or suggestions?  Feel free to speak to Wayne Barlow.

THANK YOU in advance for doing your part to  care for “the least of these” and our brothers and sisters affected by this terrible tragedy!

Well, summer is upon us; and the Children’s Ministry Team has some great things planned for the children of our church! Here is the summer schedule and there is an event page for each of these on our children’s Facebook page, FPC FAITH FRIENDS. If you haven’t “liked” the page yet, you really should so you can stay up to date on all that’s going on with the kids of FPCMA. UNLESS noted otherwise all events are for Preschool – 5th grade. Parents are ALWAYS invited and welcomed, especially with the very young preschoolers.

PLEASE take just a few seconds to either sign up on the Kids Facebook page (there is an event for each of these) or send Shasta an email. It makes planning so much easier.

Summer SPARK – On Sundays during the months of June, July and August our SPARK schedule will change slightly. During the summer months, the 3 year olds – 2nd graders will leave worship after the Children’s Sermon to participate in our Summer SPARK program. The 3rd – 5th graders will stay in worship and explore different parts of worship/faith by using their new Faith Notes (notebooks to be found in a basket outside the sanctuary). There will also be a lock-in for the 3rd-5th graders later in the summer. RSVP here.  More details below!

Movie Tuesdays – Meet Shasta at the Church at 9:00 on Tuesday mornings beginning June 4th and we’ll head over to Creekside Cinema for a FREE movie. Bring money if you want a snack, special Tuesday snack deal is a small popcorn and small drink for $3.00, but you can order whatever you want. We’ll be back at the church around Noon.

Day for Dad – Father’s Day is just around the corner so let’s show dad how much we love him. Meet at the church on Monday, June 10th at 3:30. We’ll have a snack, read a story about dad’s and then make something to give dad for Father’s Day. Please sign up so I will know how many are coming and how to plan.

Vacation Bible School – What do you get when you combine games, music, cool crafts, story telling, yummy treats and BIBLE STORIES? You get the FPCMA VBS EXTRAVAGANZA!!!  We’re doing it differently this year. We’re doing it all on a Saturday. We’ll meet at the church at 9:00 on Saturday, June 15 for a fun filled morning learning about God! Then at 1:00 parents will join us for lunch and to see and hear a little bit about what all we did.  Friends are not only welcome but encouraged! Invite someone to come with you to VBS. Grandparents, bring your grandkids. Parents, we’ll also need your help, if you’d like to volunteer please see Shasta or Pepper. PLEASE sign up in advance, for VBS AND lunch so we can plan correctly. It’s gonna be GREAT!!

Lazy 5 Ranch – On Thursday June 20th, we’ll meet at the church at 9:00 before we head out to learn more about some of God’s beautiful creatures at the Lazy 5 Ranch. We’ll leave the church at 9:15 that morning and head to Mooresville and the Lazy 5 Ranch. Once there we’ll take a wagon ride through the park to see and feed the animals. Cost is $8.50 per person that includes wagon ride and bucket of feed for the animals. We’ll get lunch before we head home so kids will need money for lunch, also.  Please sign up if you plan to attend as the price will change if we have fewer than 15 people. Deadline to sign up in Wednesday, June 5th.

3rd – 5th Grade Lock-in – On Thursday July 11 our 3rd – 5th graders are invited to the Lighthouse for a fun time of play, Bible Study and adventures. We’ll meet at the Lighthouse at 1:30 (eat lunch before you come) and spend the afternoon playing games and having fun as we talk about what it means to Worship God. After dinner we’ll head out on a top secret adventure, but we know you’ll have a blast. After that it’s back to the Lighthouse for a few late night games, snacks and movies until everyone goes to sleep. Watch for updates about what to bring, any costs there may be etc.  We’ll need a couple of parents to help chaperone this event and spend the night. Please sign up in advance so we’ll know how to plan.

It’s gonna be a great summer. We are super excited about it. We hope to see lots of you and your children over the summer!

BBBIf you were in church yesterday, you got to meet Beach Bum Bob (you can listen to his surprise exchange with Steve during the announcements HERE).

If you didn’t get to meet him, there are really only two things that you need to know:

  1. Beach Bum Bob LOVES the beach.
  2. The only thing Beach Bum Bob loves more than the beach is God’s church!

The problem is that he loves the beach so much, he’s often out of town on Sundays during the summer months.  And because he isn’t here, he’s not able to support God’s church during the worship offering.  This makes Beach Bum Bob bummed.

Which is why Beach Bum Bob is a huge fan of eGive, our church’s online giving service!

As Beach Bum Bob told us yesterday, giving online is pretty simple and only requires a few “click clicks” on the computer.  You can authorize a one-time gift directly from your bank account, or you can set it up as a recurring gift at any interval you wish.  And all transactions are 100% secure.

Of course, eGive isn’t the only way to give to the church when you’re not here – you can always mail a check to the church office.  The main thing, Beach Bum Bob says, is to remember to continue your wonderful support of God’s church when you’re away this summer.

Beach Bum Bob says he’ll be back later this summer and tell us about his beach adventures, as well as the importance of supporting God’s church when we’re here and when we’re not here.  Thank you, Beach Bum Bob, for reminding us to “Support God’s church!!”

Death of June Snow

The sympathy of the congregation today is extended to the family of June Snow.  June died last night after a lengthy battle with cancer.

A memorial service celebrating June’s life and serving as a witness to the resurrection will be held this Saturday, May 18th at 1:00pm, at First Presbyterian Church.  Visitation in the Ladies’ Parlor will follow.

Please keep Jack, Holly, April and the rest of the family in your thoughts and prayers this week.
