I did not grow up in a church tradition that flowered the cross on Easter.  But it’s quickly become my favorite part of our Resurrection service.  To gaze upon the cross – an instrument of torture and death – after it’s been transformed into a symbol and sign of eternal love with its multicolored flowerness, is a worship experience in and of itself.

That’s not to say there isn’t an element of clumsiness in making all of this happen.  Folks have to stand in line holding their flowers in one hand (and, sometimes, squirmy children in the other) as they make their way to the front.  Try as we might, we never can time the hymns quite right, and we usually wind up having to sing extra verses, which means I get to play a Baptist preacher calling out hymn verses!  The whole affair definitely adds time to the worship service.

But I think back to that first Easter morning long ago, and how things then certainly weren’t “neat and in decent order.”  I envision the women stumbling over themselves as they ran from the empty tomb to find the others.  Just as we stuttered through the last few verses of the hymn this morning, they were probably out of breath as they tried to share the good news with the other disciples.  And as they all hurried back to see for themselves what they couldn’t have imagined in their wildest dreams, they probably tripped over a stump or root on the path along the way.

Even though we have it marked on our calendar, in a spiritual sense Easter interrupts our plans.  It makes a joyful mockery of our expectations.  And it forces us to digest the Good News of the resurrection of Jesus Christ in one huge bite.  But when all is said and done, we wind up with images like the one we see every Easter Sunday in worship.  The flowered cross.  Death transformed into life.  And it’s worth the interruption.

As every year, it is an absolute joy to worship the Risen Christ with each of you on Easter morning!  May you head into the week, month and year ahead living boldly as the “Easter People” you certainly are!
