CHURCH MINISTRIES

Interested in learning more about the Psalms? Join Cecelia Belk for an exploration of the Psalms during the Sunday School hour, 9:45 – 10:45 am, going on now – Sept 17. Each Sunday we will take a close look at the psalm being preached that same morning. We will explore its context, provide space for prayer and meditation, and enjoy some lively conversation. All are welcome!

Beacons: Mark your calendars! We will start our Sunday evening meetings back up on September 10th, at Kibler Valley with the Heaths. More info to follow.

Women’s Bible Study: This fall, First Presbyterian will host a women’s community Bible study on the Gospel of Mark. This is targeted to younger women but welcoming to all. It will meet in the Fellowship Hall at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesdays from September 13-November 15. Childcare available. Questions? Call Elizabeth at (610) 715-3688.

School Supplies: The Mount Airy City School teachers need our help with a few supplies. They are looking for pencils, tissues, Clorox wipes, and hand sanitizer. A box will be located in the collections area at the bottom of the stairs.   There is also a box at the top of the stairs for collections.  If you prefer, Beth Pequeno can shop for you. Thank you!

SPARK Teachers for the Fall: We need one teacher for the preschool class for each Sunday & two teachers for the K-2nd grade each Sunday. There is a sign-up sheet for teachers for the fall season on the bulletin board in the upstairs foyer.

First Steps: The childcare program at the church has really taken off and is doing well. Some things we’d like to share with you:
• We still have space available. Contact Julie Marshall (juliehillmarshall@gmail.com) for more info.
• The program has grown to 16 students currently, with 9 of those being new.
• We have four teachers: Julie Marshall, Kathy Rogers, Jennifer Joyce and Linda Surratt.
• The two year-old class is asking for donations of the following items: Healthy pre-packaged snacks (Goldfish, Strawberry Cheerios, Graham Crackers, etc. and riding toys that can be used inside and out.

VBS Update: The CE Team has decided to cancel VBS this year. Mark your calendars for Homecoming which will be held on Sunday, September 17th.

Flowers for the Sanctuary: We still have open dates available for flowers in the sanctuary on Sunday mornings. September 17 & 24; October 15 & 29; and November 12. Sign up on the flower chart or call the church office.

Parents of Faith Friends (Preschool – 5th grade): Look for a text soon from Griff to come to a meeting about Thursday Tales and Get Ready, Get Set, Worship. We will meet to discuss how we as parents can come together to teach our kids about Jesus (and have a little fun) while Shasta continues treatment. The tentative plan is to begin Thursday Tales on September 14th at 3:30 p.m. and Get Ready! Get Set! Worship! the week before.

WITNESS

Offering for Hunger and Hope: Next Sunday, September 3rd, we will receive our Pennies for Hunger and Yokefellow food offerings. Both offerings help us to feed folks in our community and around the world. The suggested foods for the month of September are: Canned Vegetables and Cooking Oil. All non-perishable foods are accepted.

Beacon and Parent Meeting: Join Sandy Bowers and Griff this evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall to discuss how the Beacons will proceed this fall as Shasta continues her cancer treatment. We will be looking to the Beacons and their parents for leadership for different events and activities.

Faith Friends (Pre-K-5th grade) to Splash Pad: Tuesday, August 15th, 10:30 a.m.; We’ll meet at the church and carpool over to the splash pad in Dobson. Bring a picnic, chair and/or a blanket and let’s have some fun!

Keenagers: Join us for lunch at noon on Thursday, August 17th at Old North State Winery. We will discuss the fall schedule. We need a Keenager to coordinate the logistics for the various trips this Fall. Please let Lydia Taylor or Griff know if you will be joining us.

Faith Friends and Family Day at Hanging Rock: Saturday, August 19th, 10:00 a.m. We will meet at the lakefront beach at Hanging Rock.  The cost for the day is $5.00 per person.  Bring your chair, snacks or a picnic and everything you need for a day of fun in and on the water. See Blanton or Lauren Youell if you plan to go. 

Children’s sermons: If you would like to join the rotation of adults giving the children’s sermons, please contact Griff by sending an email to griff@fpcma.com.

Sympathy of the Congregation

Our heartfelt sympathy is expressed to the family of Fred Barnett who passed away on Saturday, July 29, 2017.  A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 6, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church, Mt. Airy, NC, with a reception in the Fellowship Hall following the service. In honor of Fred’s life-long dedication to aviation, and weather permitting, there will be a flyover of vintage World War II era Boeing-Stearman PT-17 biplanes immediately before the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Fred’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS, 66675; First Presbyterian Church, 326 S. Main St. Mt. Airy, NC 27030; or to Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
