Sermon texts for upcoming Sundays: Sermon texts for upcoming Sundays: This spring our sermon text will be from the Gospel of Luke. During Lent, Luke focuses on Jesus and His Mission. I would encourage you to read Luke 9-19. April 7 – Jesus Teaches about Wealth, Possessions, Generosity, Luke 16: 18-30. April 14th- Palm Sunday; April 21st- Easter, Luke 24:1-12

Circle 1: Will meet on Tuesday, April 2nd, at 10:00 a.m. in the Card Room at Ridgecrest Retirement Community.

Spring Clean-Up Day: Saturday, April 6th, 8:30 a.m. until 12 noon. We will be sprucing up the church grounds in preparation for Easter. We will be mulching both playgrounds, cleaning the gutters at the Scout Hut, removing dead bushes and cleaning around the Lighthouse. See Mike Branch if you wish to help.

Bible Dedication in Honor of Shasta Brown on April 7th: Many of us are marking the return of Spring this year by remembering the last season of Shasta’s life last spring as she battled cancer. On April 7th, we will dedicate new pew bibles in gratitude for her life and her ministry among us from 2001-2018. In her life and ministry she gave witness to the prayer of the psalmist, “Your word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (119:105)

It’s that time again! We’ll be having the Children’s Easter Party on Saturday, April 20th at 3:00 p.m. We are in need of individually wrapped candy and plastic Easter eggs. If you’re willing to help us with this effort, you may drop them off in the bins outside of Loida’s office door. Thanks so much!

Walk through the Bible Sunday School Class: Join us each week from 9:45 to 10:45 each Sunday in the Fellowship Hall. The class combines discussion, cool videos and reading the Bible in small groups. Childcare is available. Griff is teaching this class.

Preschool Sunday School: If you would be willing to teach or assist with the 3 to 5 year old class beginning the month of April, please contact Loida Slate at loida@fpcma.com. Sunday School is from 9:45 am to 10:45 am.

Wednesday Night Suppers During Lent: Dinner starts at 6:00 and we will conclude by 7:30. Dinner costs $7 per adult and $5 per child (with a cap of $25 per family). Please RSVP by Tuesday of each week using the link, (https://tinyurl.com/y3eru55d) or calling the church office, 336-786-2803 prior to the dinner on Wednesday. If you’d like to read the book along with our study, check out The Meal Jesus Gave us by Tom Wright.

WITNESS

Friends Feeding Friends: Will be held at First Baptist Church on Thursday, April 4th, at 5:00 p.m. Sign up on the board in the upstairs foyer if you’d like to assist.

American Red Cross Blood Drive: Will be held on Monday, April 1st, from 1:30 until 6:00 p.m. at the Chapter Building, 844 Westlake Drive in Mount Airy. Please help them save lives by giving blood.

Scarves Around Surry: We are continuing to collect scarves, yarn, and donations. Boxes are located in the upstairs foyer at the church. You can sponsor a scarf for $5. Contact Beth Pequeno at 336.756.1879 or beth.pequeno@gmail.com for more information.

Welcome Loida Slate! Loida joined our church staff and our church family this past week as our Coordinator of Children’s Discipleship and Musical Offerings. Please join me in extending a kind FPCMA welcome to her, her husband, Les, their daughter, Anna, and Loida’s father, Acacio Pereira.

Loida most recently served as director of Christian Education at Ardmore Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. She has also taught different languages, literature and cultural studies classes at Surry Community College, Millennium Charter Academy and UNC-Chapel Hill.

Loida’s focus will be on continuing and strengthening the Christian formation of the children (age 2 to 5th grade) of the congregation. She will be inviting you to get to know them by teaching in Children’s Church and Sunday School or by volunteering on Wednesday afternoons with Faith Friends or on Holy Saturday for the Easter Party.

Loida is a musician. She grew up performing music at church and sings and plays the violin in her local band, Gypsy Laurel. She will be leading our member lead Sundays. (The next one is next week). She will also be singing in the choir and supporting our volunteer choir directors and organist.

Thank You Valerie! As Loida comes, we say thank you to Valerie Parker for serving as our interim Coordinator for Children’s Discipleship. She has done a great job loving our kids and inviting us into their lives. We are so glad that she is not going anywhere…except back to the choir.

Faith Friends: Will meet on March 27th at 5:00 pm. The kids will do a Lenten activity as well as practice music for Palm Sunday. Wednesday night supper will be at 6:00 p.m.

Sympathy of the Congregation

Our heartfelt sympathy is expressed to Mae Turpin and family on the death of her son, Charles Braxton Turpin, Jr., who passed away on Friday, March 15, 2019.

A private interment will be held for his family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 326 S. Main St., Mount Airy, NC 27030.

Faith Friends Lenten Activities

FAITH FRIENDS is a group in the church, pre-K through 5th grade, that meets at different times throughout the year.  We are in the middle of the Lenten season and have a couple of fun afternoons planned.  So, mark your calendars for Wednesday, March 13 (TODAY!) and March 27 at 5:00 pm. We will do a Lenten activity as well as practice music for Palm Sunday. Wednesday night supper will follow at 6:00 pm. in the Fellowship Hall.

Sympathy of the Congregation

Our heartfelt sympathy is expressed to Rick, Sara and Oren Bailey on the death of Sara’s Mom, Lenore Walston, who passed away Sunday, March 10th.  Lenore was a light in the midst of our congregation for a number of years.  Due to mobility and physical issues, she was not able to be in worship for quite some time.  She will be missed and remembered by many.  No formal service is scheduled at this time.  Please be in prayer for the family.

Bob Chilton Memorial Bible Study: Will be held on Thursday, March 14th, at 8:00 a.m. at Pages. Join us for coffee and a great discussion.

Children’s Church: Thank you for stepping up to teach our “littles!” We have the following dates available if you’d like to spend more time with the children of the church: March 10, 17 and 31. Two helpers are needed for each Sunday. If you would like to assist, please contact Valerie Parker.

Preschool Sunday School: If you would be willing to assist with the 3 to 5 year old class the month of March, please contact Valerie Parker. Sunday School is from 9:45 am to 10:45 am.

WITNESS

Friends Feeding Friends: This is a wonderful opportunity to take part in helping to feed the hungry in our community. Sign up in the upstairs foyer if you would like to assist. Volunteers are always needed – the 1st and 2nd Thursday of each month. The following are signed up to assist on Thursday, March 14th: Bob and Sylvia Chilton, Bob Keck and Mike Gatchel.

Yokefellow Cooperative Ministry: Their purpose is to assist others in times of crisis. Assistance is provided with food, prescription medicine and utilities. The amount of assistance depends on available resources. You can help with some of the resources by donating non-perishable food(s). The foods for the month of March: Crackers and Peanut Butter; April: Dried Beans and Canned Vegetables; May: Spaghetti and Spaghetti Sauce.

Scarves Around Surry: We are continuing to collect scarves, yarn, and donations. Boxes are located in the upstairs foyer at the church. You can sponsor a scarf for $5. Contact Beth Pequeno at 336.756.1879 or beth.pequeno@gmail.com for more information.
