Where Are We In Calling a Pastor?

Ok, I know this question gets tossed around quite a bit!! It is certainly a legitimate question!!

As your interim pastor, I’ll do my best to answer:

– Remember, in the Presbyterian Church, we do not have a bishop. There is no ecclesiastical person who is at the helm, ordering and mandating what needs to be done. The way we call pastors is quite different from most church bodies. We go through a process that is deliberate, and yes, good or bad, slower than most churches. Though we have no bishop, we do have a Presbytery which requires certain things to be done. Below is summary of what we have done, some of which is required by the Committee on Ministry of the Presbytery:

1. Held several gatherings, opportunities for the congregation to be engaged in discernment process. Church-wide gathering in February, Cottage Meetings in March, Church-Wide Survey in June, Church Leadership retreat in August. All of this feedback went into a published Mission Study which was approved by the Presbytery on August 28. (We are in the process of preparing a condensed version available to all).
2. We were required by Salem Presbytery to submit a 5 year financial plan which was approved in June.
3. We elected our Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) on July 27. These persons are:
Sylvia Chilton, Margaret Cockerell, Derek Higgs, Jessica Hoerter, Dalton Mayes, Peter Pequeno, and
Blanton Youell. Until the Mission Study was approved, the PNC could not formally begin their work.
4. Beginning the week of September 1, the PNC has been very active preparing what is called the Ministry Information Form (MIF), which amounts to our church’s resume. The MIF, when completed, must also be approved by Presbytery. Once that is done, the MIF goes online throughout the entire denomination and the PNC can fully begin the search for a new pastor.
5. The goal of having the MIF complete is Sunday, September 21. The Session will approve it first, then Presbytery, then the PNC is “off and running!”

When a new pastor will be called is, of course, unknown. The timing of the call of your new permanent pastoral leader is truly the work of Holy Spirit through the members of the PNC whom you have entrusted to make that decision.

What can you do?? Pray daily for God’s will to be done; pray that the PNC be given wisdom, a spirit of discernment, and energy for the task at hand. Speak to members of the PNC and encourage them in their work. If you happen to know of someone in the Presbyterian Church who might be seeking a call, you can certainly refer a name. You cannot ask for specifics, though. The work of the PNC is confidential until a selection is made. As the process moves along, the PNC will be keeping you informed.

I hope this helps! I hope you can put up with me for a few more months!!

Grace & Peace!

Rob
