Wordles are so 2007, but they still have a place in our social media culture.  If you don’t know what a Wordle is, here’s the deal: you take a long list of text and generate a visual representation of the words via any number of websites (the most notable being wordle.net). You can choose the color scheme and font, and whether the words read horizontal or vertical; but the really neat thing about Wordles is that you can easily tell what words matter the most.  The larger the word, the more times it appears.  Likewise, the smaller the word, the less it appears.

Over the years I’ve had fun with Wordles, plugging in my sermons and even our confirmands’ Statement of Faiths.  But this past week I stumbled upon a pretty neat Wordle of the four gospels: the actual text from Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  Here, in essence, is a visual depiction of the life of Jesus as accounted in the words of the first four books of the New Testament:

So, a few thoughts: first, obviously “Jesus” is the biggest and “God” is not far behind.  But notice some of the others that stack up size-wise: “One,” “came/come,” “disciples,” “people,” “went.”  It’s also interesting to note the things that don’t appear here – think of all the hot-button issues that occupy so much time of the church’s time and energy these days; ones that lie at the center of some of our current culture wars.  It’s not that they weren’t important to Jesus, but as the Bible text itself shows, there were other things of greater significance.

And a second thought: if you could take an average week in your life and somehow put it into words, and then make a Wordle of that, what would your Wordle look like?  How large would things like “love” and “compassion” and “grace” stack up against other things?  Would “television” trump “worship?”  “Self” loom larger than “service?”

It’s so hard to quantify our life in any meaningful way – if for no other reason than we’re running from here to there, checking things off our agendas, keeping on keeping on.  But it’s wise, I think, to stop every once in a while and do some self-reflection, making note of the kind of lives we lead from the outside.  What do others see in us?  How are we viewed and perceived by our children and parents, by our family and friends, by our co-workers and colleagues?  And perhaps most significantly: do our lives truly reflect the man we’ve chosen to follow; the man whose kingdom on earth we’re helping to build?

As they old saying goes: words do matter.  Not just when we speak them, but when we live them too!
