CHURCH MINISTRIES

Beacons: Will meet this evening in the Lighthouse at 5:30 p.m.  The Wilson family will be providing dinner.

Lighting the Christ Candle in Shasta’s Memory: An ancient practice in the Christian Church during the Easter season is to light the Christ or Easter or Paschal candle on Easter Eve.  The candle symbolizes the light of Christ coming into the world.  This light is extinguished with his death on Good Friday and re-lit to begin the Easter Celebration.  As we grieve the death of our Christian Educator, Shasta Bode-Brown, we will light the Christ candle each Sunday.  Shasta reflected the love and light of Christ in her ministry among us.  As a symbol of Shasta’s ministry, the Christ candle is surrounded by seventeen smaller votive candles: one for each year of her service to the church when she reflected Christ’s love to those around her.

Shasta Bode-Brown Memorial Fund: FPCMA has set up a memorial fund in honor Shasta’s service to our church and God’s kingdom.  All gifts to this fund will go to help the Brown family pay for costs associated with Shasta’s fight against cancer.  Our goal is to pay for all of her medical bills along with the memorial service expenses.  Our best estimate of these costs is that they will exceed $14,000.

There are three ways to contribute to this fund:

  • Gifts can be given directly to the church.  The church address is P. O. Box 1286, Mount Airy, NC 27030.  Please indicate on the memo line of your check that the gift is for the Shasta B. Brown Memorial Fund.
  • Gifts can be given any branch of Surrey Bank and Trust to the Shasta B. Brown Memorial Fund.
  • Gifts can be given online through YouCaring.com.

If you worship at First Presbyterian, your gift should be matched dollar for dollar by the Board of Pensions once they approve a grant application.  If you are a member of First Presbyterian and give online, please let the church office know the amount of your gift so that we can be sure that your gift is counted towards this match.

A Sacred Sorrow: Reaching out to God in the Lost Language of Lament – by Michael Card: Griff will be reading this book and invites you to read it with him as an invitation to process your grief with others and with God.  Copies of the book are available on the book table in the Koinonia Room and cost $13.  We will begin meeting this coming week on Monday, April 30th, at 7:00 p.m. at Griff and Elizabeth’s house (145 Orchard Street).  We will meet for 6 weeks.  The reading is divided into short chapters.  During our first meeting, we will discuss Part One: An Ancient Lament.  Let Griff know if you are interested.

Circle 1: Will meet on Tuesday, May 1st, at 10:00 a.m. in the Card Room at Ridgecrest Retirement Home.

Mark your calendars!  Please join us for Vacation Bible School June 11 – 13.  Interested in volunteering? Contact Nicole Harrison at nicole@moodyfs.com.

Playground Equipment (Toys) Needed for First Steps One Year-Old Play Area: If you have any push toys that can be used for outdoors, that you are no longer using, and would like to donate them to our First Steps program, we would love to have them for our children to play with.

Summer Spark Teachers Needed:  If you love children and want to help them grow in their relationship with the Lord this summer, please see Amy Heath.

Summer Sunday Worship: Beginning Memorial Day weekend, May 27th, through Labor Day, Sunday, September 2nd, we will have worship at 10:00 a.m.  We hope you will join us!

Beacon Yard Sale: Saturday, June 2nd, 7:00 a.m. -12:00 noon.  Remember that saying… “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure…” The Beacons will be accepting all donations.  Contact the church when you wish to drop off items, as we will be storing them in the Lighthouse until the week of the sale.

Calling all Graduates! If you are graduating from high school, college or graduate school, let us celebrate with you.  High school graduates – we need the following: school, parents’ names, college you will be attending, and a senior picture. College and Graduate School graduates: University and degree. We need your information as soon as possible.

Friends Feeding Friends: Will meet at First Baptist Church on Thursday, May 3rd, at 5:00 p.m.  The following people are signed up to assist: Wayne and Joy Barlow, Bob and Sylvia Chilton, Bob Keck, Mae Daniels, Mike Gatchel and Paul Belk.

Offering for Hunger and Hope: Next Sunday, May 6th, we will receive our Pennies for Hunger and Yokefellow food offerings.  The foods for the month of May are: Spaghetti and Spaghetti Sauce. All non-perishable foods are accepted.

Yokefellow Cooperative Ministry: The Annual Postal Food Drive that will benefit Yokefellow will take place on Saturday, May 12th, from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.  Please be generous when you place your bag of non-perishable food at your door or mailbox on the street for the mail carrier to pick up.  Also, if you have an hour to spend with us processing the donations, come to Yokefellow and help us sort.  See Mike Gatchel for more information.

Update on Shasta

Dear Friends in Christ,

It is with sadness that I share with you the news of the death of our director of Christian Education, Shasta Bode-Brown.  She passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends this evening. Shasta had been battling ovarian cancer for the past year and died of complications related to her cancer.  Her death is a shock and a surprise to us all.

We have just celebrated the resurrection of Jesus on Easter.  With Sunday’s Alleluias still echoing in our ears, this news is jarring, ill-fitting, and threatens to swallow our hope. But, Shasta loved Easter and holy week.  She guided many of us in preparing to stand at the foot of the cross on Good Friday, to anticipate Jesus resurrection on Holy Saturday, and to celebrate with joy the new life his empty grave brings on Easter morning.   Her death leaves us speechless with grief but her witness among us points us to her hope and ours.

The message of Easter is that we have a future together with her.   The Father raised the Son from the dead, and we trust that he will rise all those who are found in him.  When I visited with Shasta on Good Friday- She said to me:” I will fight this cancer and we will figure out together what to do if I lose.  But I know that because of what happened on the cross today all will be well.” Amidst our tears we say amen.

A memorial service will be scheduled in the next few days.   Updates will be sent out through the on-line grape vine and social media.

At this time, join me in giving thanks to the Living God for Shasta’s life and prayers of comfort for Mark, Kate, and Sam.

In Christ,

Griff

Good evening,

I wanted to write and clarify that there are two events happening tomorrow.

The prayer vigil tomorrow night has not changed.  We will gather from 5-7 pm.

Today, I met with the parents of children/ youth and to update them on Shasta’s situation.   This was a time to ask listen and ask question, grieve, and process.  They were rich times.  Upon reflection it seemed that folks in the congregation outside these folks would appreciate a similar time.  So, tomorrow at noon I’ll be in the fellowship hall if you would like to come to talk.

Best,

Griff

Informal Prayer Time for Shasta

In the past several days, we have attempted to make the best of an incredibly tough situation regarding the news about Shasta’s medical condition.

Griff met with the Faith Friends and their parents this morning, which went really well. He will meet with the Beacons and their parents this evening. With that being said, we will have an informal prayer time for Shasta tomorrow (Thursday, April 5th) at noon in the Fellowship Hall at the church.

We would love for you to join us if you can.
