WELCOME TO OUR NEW ELDERS

Durenda Wilson

  1. Describe yourself. This could include your family, your job, what you like to do, etc.

I am a wife to one, mom to eight(ages 14-27) and nana to 6. I’ve homeschooled our kids from the beginning and now have an online ministry of encouragement to homeschool moms. I’ve written 2 books geared toward homeschool moms as well. I love spending time with my family.

  1. When did you start coming to First Presbyterian Church, and what do you enjoy about being part of this community?

We began attending First Presbyterian Church in July of 2017 and we love that FPCMA has welcomed us like family. We also love the rich traditions, liturgy and strong biblical teaching.

  1. How would you describe your relationship to Jesus Christ?

I’ve been a Christian ever since I can remember, so I’ve had a chance to experience many different denominations which has given me a unique perspective on the vast and varied ways God’s people worship. I feel like this reveals what a creative God we serve. I love His Word. I would also say that my relationship with Him is very real and very personal. My greatest experiences with Him are when I lay down my own agenda, look around to see what HE is already doing and join Him in that work.

  1. How would you like to make First Presbyterian Church better?

I’d love to help facilitate what God is already doing in drawing the hearts of His people into deeper relationship with Him and encourage them to courageously walk out their faith on a daily basis. I would also love to encourage and strengthen families.

Longest Night Service: Advent is more than a time than preparation for Christmas. It is a time to acknowledge that we are a people who live in darkness and in light, in sorrow and in joy, in despair and in hope. This Sunday night, December 16th, we invite you to come to our Longest Night Service. As we approach the longest night of the year, this service creates space for us to bring our prayers of lament and our sighs of longing before the Living God. This time gives us space to trust more fully that the light has come into the darkness and the darkness has not overwhelmed it. (John 1)

Beth Hilliard will speak. She is a mother to two young toddlers and a cancer survivor. She lives in Winston. Kelsey Carlisle, one of our own, back from NC School of the Arts, will accompany our singing. We will all gather around the Lord’s Supper.

The service will begin at 7:00 p.m. and should last no more than an hour. Childcare will be provided.

Christmas Caroling: Come one and all to walk the streets of Mount Airy and sing of the Savior’s birth at the front door of friends and strangers. Come to the Gatewood’s house, 145 Orchard Street, at 7:00 p.m. this Wednesday, December 19th. There will be candles and song sheets. We will head out from there to sing around the neighborhood. Come see the shock and delight of folks as they receive the gift of strangers singing the good news.

Beacons: (6th-12th grade): We will not meet this evening. Here are several things to mark on your calendar: *We will go caroling on Wednesday, December 19th at 7:00 p.m. at the Gatewood’s. *Our Progressive Dinner will be held on Friday, December 21st, beginning at 5:00 p.m. Please bring a $20 gift for our gift exchange. *Christmas Pageant Rehearsal will be held on Sunday, December 23rd, at 3:00 p.m. *Christmas Pageant will be held on Monday, December 24th, at 3:00 p.m. PLEASE be here no later than 2:30 p.m.
