CHURCH MINISTRIES

Beacons: Will meet this evening at 5:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.

Get Ready! Get Set! Worship! Will meet on Monday, January 30th, at 3:30 p.m.

“Soup”er Bowl of Caring: The Beacons have been challenged by the Main Street churches to see who can collect the most cans of soup and/or monetary donations before next Sunday, February 5th. So, when you’re at the store, grab some extra cans or make a monetary donation before the 5th and help us meet our goal – to feed the hungry in our community!

New Members Class: If you have been attending FPCMA regularly and would like to consider joining the church, there will be a membership class in February. Please let Griff know you are interested by calling the office or sending an email to griff@fpcma.
Starting next week, we will begin a sermon series on the Ten Commandments. We will look at the commandments to see how most of the commandments are a “no” in service to a greater “yes.” God says no to some things in our lives in order to say yes to other things that cause us to thrive and flourish. This series will take us from the beginning of February to Palm Sunday.

Griff will be leading a Lenten Bible Study on these commandments starting in the last week of March.

Like to crochet or knit? A new small group will begin meeting on the first Sunday of the month, beginning Feb. 5. If you crochet, knit, or would like to learn, please come to the Fellowship Hall at 4:00 p.m. Bring your yarn, hooks and needles, your favorite patterns and projects to share.

Keenagers: ATTENTION: Two things to update you on concerning future trips. First, the date for the February trip to the Greek Orthodox Church has been changed to February 23rd. If you are already signed up, please check your calendar and make sure there’s no conflict. Deadline to sign up is Sunday, February 12th. Second, our March trip to the Barter Theater is to see “Mamma Mia.” The deadline to sign up and pay for that is Sunday, February 5th.

A note from Griff:
I wanted to thank you for the generous gift of time you have given me over the last few weeks as I have been out on paternity leave. This time has given me the flexibility to navigate our transition from a family of three to a family of four. We are still in transition but are doing well. – Griff

WITNESS

Friends Feeding Friends: Thursday, February 2nd, 5:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church. The following have signed up to assist with this wonderful ministry: Bob and Sylvia Chilton, Mike Gatchel and Bob Keck. Other volunteers are needed. Please sign up on the board in the upstairs foyer.

Service Saturday: For February, we’ll be working with the Beacons collecting lots of cans of food to feed the hungry as a part of the “Soup”er Bowl of Caring! It only takes a little to make a big difference!

Offering for Hunger and Hope: Next Sunday, February 5th, we will receive our Pennies for Hunger and Yokefellow food offerings. The foods for the next few months are: February: Flour, Rice; March: Crackers, Peanut Butter; April: Cooking Oil, Dried Beans; All non-perishable items are accepted. Please make sure that all contributions are not out of date.

Dear Congregation,
We will have an informal worship serve tomorrow morning at eleven.  Sunday School will be canceled.
Please come only if you have a safe way to arrive at the church.  Use extreme caution.
For those of you who worship at home, see an outline of a short service below.
Also,  the baby shower for Nicole Harrison has been rescheduled for next Sunday. Beacon activities tomorrow night will be canceled.

From Psalm 51

Open my lips, O Lord, *
and my mouth shall proclaim your praise.
Create in me a clean heart, O God, *
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence *
and take not your holy Spirit from me.
Give me the joy of your saving help again *
and sustain me with your bountiful Spirit.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

A Reading

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!
By his great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope
through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
1 Peter 1:3

Read Matthew 2:1-12:  Today in church we will hear about the wise men who come to meet the young Jesus.

A period of silence may follow.

A hymn sung may be sung; the Apostles’ Creed may be said.

Prayers may be offered for ourselves and others.

The Lord’s Prayer

The Collect

Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought
us in safety to this new day: Preserve us with your mighty
power, that we may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by
adversity; and in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your
purpose; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

It is our intention that all church activities take place as scheduled. However, there are times when the weather makes it difficult to do so. In an attempt to be proactive, FPC has adopted the following policy:

All decisions concerning the cancellation of Sunday morning and evening activities will be made by the Pastor & Clerk of Session with input from the Director of Christian Education.
During the week, if the Mount Airy City Schools are closed due to inclement weather, any church activities scheduled for that morning, afternoon or evening will be cancelled.
A notification of all cancelled church functions will be placed on WXII Channel 12, Facebook, Twitter and the Online Grapevine as soon as possible.
